Our Story

Thea Snow, the Founder of The Toy Well:

When I became a mother in 2010, I discovered a new world. Mummy blogs. Playgrounds. Story time. And toy libraries.

The toy library became a loved part of my weekly routine. My son and I would browse and choose toys, puzzles and games together. The library manager helped us choose age-appropriate toys as my son grew – toys for fine motor skills, sensory play; games with different colours and shapes.

And while these games and toys just seemed like fun, I understood, as someone who works in education policy, that they were actually much more than that. Games and toys support play. And play is the way that young children learn. For young children, play is their education. And that’s why providing children with toys to support quality play experiences is so important.

As a busy mum, having a selection of high quality toys at home was a huge help to me. It gave me time to cook, answer emails, or whatever I needed to do, knowing that my son was using toys that were actually playing an important role in his education and development. And being able to swap them regularly meant that my son didn’t lose interest.

I learnt to love the toy library. But when I looked around at the members, I realised that they weren’t reaching a lot of other families and children who could really benefit from such a service.

“And so the idea for The Toy Well was born – the idea being to establish toy libraries for families and communities who needed it most.”

And so the idea for The Toy Well was born – the idea being to establish toy libraries for families and communities who needed it most. Wouldn’t it be great to get high quality toys into the houses of children whose circumstances meant that parents might not be as easily able to engage in high quality play? Wouldn’t it be valuable to provide a service which would ensure that these children had the tools at their disposal to play, learn and grow in their homes.

I so deeply believe that every child should be given the best possible opportunity to learn, thrive, and prosper, regardless of the family or circumstances into which they are born. The Toy Well aims to support this by providing children and families facing challenging life circumstances with access to a high quality toy lending service to support fun and educational play based learning in the home.
